Kitten Pens & Indoor Cat Playpens

A pen gives a new kitten a safe base in the first few weeks — somewhere to sleep, eat, and toilet without being overwhelmed by the rest of the house. It’s also invaluable for cats recovering from neutering, vet surgery, or introducing a second cat to the home.

The pick we’d actually buy. Folds flat for storage between uses (most kitten pens get used for a few months then sit around for years), the panels lock together solidly, and the door catch is genuinely kitten-proof — not always a given at this price.

Best for: new kittens, post-surgery recovery, cat introductions.

What to Look For in a Kitten Pen

  • Bar spacing: no more than 5cm between bars so kittens can’t get their head through. Kittens under 12 weeks need 3cm or less.
  • Height: 90cm minimum for short-term use; 120cm+ if the pen is a regular day enclosure. Taller pens can fit a shelf or hammock.
  • Door security: double-action latches or locking catches. A kitten that can bump a latch open defeats the purpose.
  • Foldability: most owners only need a kitten pen for the first 3–6 months. A pen that folds flat stores easily for years or resells well.
  • Floor tray: a pull-out tray makes accidents easy to clean without disassembling the pen.
